Jonathan F. Babbitt
Jonathan F. Babbitt is a graduate of Yale University and the Yale School of Music, where he was Director of the Freshman Chorus and Associate Director of the Yale Glee Club under the tutelage of Fenno Heath. His compositions have premiered at the prestigious International Contemporary Music Festival in Bonn, Germany, and at Connecticut and Rhode Island Music Educator's Association events here in the United States. Babbitt has numerous recordings to his credit; "A Newport Triptych" featuring chamber chorus works in three styles was released in November of 1998, and his live performance of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem was released on compact disk in 2000.
Babbitt holds concurrent positions as Music Director of the Litchfield County Choral Union in Norfolk, Connecticut; Swanhurst Chorus and the Swanhurst Chorus Chamber Singers in Newport, Rhode Island; the Waterbury Chorale in Waterbury, Connecticut and the Greater Tiverton Community Chorus in Tiverton, Rhode Island. He also serves as Organist/Choirmaster at the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Newport, Rhode Island.
In addition to his work as a choral conductor, Babbitt is also an accomplished organist and has performed recitals throughout New England and Europe. He is also active in music education at the elementary, secondary, and college levels. He has been widely published in music journals and together with his wife Lisa maintains a private teaching studio in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
"Babbitt's firm baton technique clearly telegraphed the entrances to the choral sections and the orchestral players. He . . . made the afternoon."
" . . . the audience experienced the most competent and moving performance of [the Britten War Requiem] that anyone could ever hope to hear."
"Jonathan Babbitt must have been following a map he knew would get him and his musicians to where he wanted to go."
